Custodial history
After being dismantled from the walls of the Health Sciences Centre, the display was stored in the HSIMS office on the first floor of the Health Sciences Centre. There it remained in storage until being transferred to the Founders’ Archive in November 1999.
Scope and content
Health Science Information and Media Services (HSIMS) has been documenting the formation and development of the Faculty of Medicine and the Health Sciences Centre since the first mention of a medical school for Memorial University. The photographs and visual materials in this collection were part of a large display that was created by HSIMS in 1983 on the anniversary of the Medical School at Memorial. It originally hung in the lobby of the Health Sciences Centre until 1984 when it was removed and stored and later, donated to the Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive.

Immediate source of acquisition
The HSIMS Photograph collection was acquired from Eugene Ryan, one of the original people who worked on the anniversary display and still works with HSIMS.
Arrangement
When the HSIMS Photograph collection arrived at the Founders’ Archive, it was still set up as a visual display. Photographs, charts, diagrams, and other visual material were still mounted on mats, and framed in large glass and metal display frames. Each frame had a heading attached to it as part of the larger display and these headings form the series descriptors for this collection. All photographs and other matters were removed from the mats and frames and placed in archival quality storage materials.
