Biographical history
Stephen V. James (1868-?), school supervisor, and teacher, was born at Brigus in June 1868, son of Sarah and Patrick James, a planter. James and his wife, Bridget, had one son, Stephen, who was born in 1897.
James received his teacher's training at St. Bonaventure's Normal School (December 1887-July 1890), taught at St. Jacques (1890-1892), then returned to teach at the Brigus (Boys) School. In 1903, James served as Council of Higher Education (CHE) supervisor for Brigus.

The fonds consists of 3 bound notebooks and 3 photographs. Two of the notebooks contain school material; the third appears to be a delivery ledger and contains names and addresses of St. John's residents. One photograph appears to be a wedding portrait, entitled the James family; two are class portraits, entitled St. Bond's [sic] Class and Convent St. John's 1880's.

The 3 bound notebooks measure 20 cm x 12.5 cm to 23.5 cm x 1 cm. The notebooks are inscribed Stephen V. James. The 3 photographs measure 16 cm x 21.5 cm or smaller and are inscribed in pencil.
