The Newfoundland Medical Board was established in 1893 as a statutory body by the Legislative Council and House of Assembly of the Colony of Newfoundland with powers for “the making and enforcing of measures necessary for the regulation and practice of medicine, and the protection and preservation of life and health”.
The Medical Act, 2005 continued the Newfoundland Medical Board under the name of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Custodial history
The majority of the collection was transferred to the Faculty of Medicine Founders’ Archive from the Rooms, Provincial Archives Division, from an unprocessed accession. Many directories were also provided by the Newfoundland Medical Board directly. Where several copies of a directory were transferred, two copies were selected for permanent retention and the remainder given to the Health Sciences Library for their collection or disposal.
Scope and content
The collection includes Newfoundland Medical Board Directories (1915-2006) and Registers of licenses issued by the Newfoundland Medical Board (1894-1982). Newfoundland Medical Board Directories are an annual publication providing a complete list of medical practitioners resident in Newfoundland who are registered and licensed. Their professional address, and the date and location of their alma mater are given. The registers of licenses issued to medical practitioners usually indicate the doctor’s name, the date they were given the license, their address, the license number, and their alma mater. A menu from the Newfoundland Medical Association’s annual dinner (1955) is also in the collection.
